This past month we have experienced some wild weather patterns in southern Ontario and it was on one of those thunderstorm days that a Red Tailed Hawk shared a message with me and my friend.

We were waffling about whether to head out for our scheduled 5pm Nordic pole walk as the skies were quite ominous however; we changed locations and decided to give it a try. Leaving from my place on a rural road, we head out for a quick walk and chat before beginning the evening supper activities. The winds were quite strong which gave a sense of anticipation. My attention was drawn above to a beautiful hawk circling above…how I love to watch the birds of prey as they are on the lookout for their next catch. As we moved along, I noticed that the hawk was now about 200 meters ahead of us and just hovering in the sky on the north side of the roadway.

I motioned to my friend and we were both so intrigued on how this light bird could hover and hold its position with the winds as strong as they were. As we approached, it did not move…there was intensity of its focus. It was hard to see if that focus was on us or something else….! We were passing the hawk and kept half turned around to watch it…unable to take our eyes off; so curious to see if it was going to move. Sure enough, with lightning speed it dove to the ground below and disappeared into the long grasses at the side of the road. I noticed a car coming from the same direction and said “let’s see if the car passing disturbs the hawk to come up”. Sure enough it did and in its beak, supper appeared to be a small mouse or shrew. Amazed to have witnessed this, we expected the hawk to fly off to enjoy its catch. Instead, it circled around us and once again placed itself just ahead of us, hovering over just long enough to show off its prey, then it moved the mouse from its beak to its talons and flew away. We were in complete awe! The hawk intentionally came back to show us its catch before heading off. I knew this was a message for us from the hawk and couldn’t wait to look up the totem message when I got home.

The main characteristics of the message from Red Tailed Hawk came up as Visionary, Awareness of the Big Picture, Latent Power, Guardianship, Higher Calling and Channeling. For a link to the website I referenced click here.  For me, what stood out was the Visionary who believes that all things happen for a reason and Guardianship to honour and protect Mother Earth because I hold a deep knowing that all is one. There is much development change happening in our geographic area and I am aware of how that effects our energy as we witness the falling of many trees, the covering up of yet more precious acres of farm field for new housing developments and more road expansion. We will adjust, however it is important to take time to pray for the wellbeing of the creatures that are affected, the landscapes and us, the residents who have known these beautiful lands.
