An enneagram relationships day is back on the calendar after receiving a strong uptake of inquiries from both clients and friends.
Maybe you feel solid in all your relationships so this may not call out to you. Or maybe there is a spark of curiosity, whether to know more about what this is or a desire to understand yourself or another in your life better.
Something that will create more understanding, softening and acceptance. With all the turmoil and shifts happening in our outside world, this may prove to be the perfect time and perfect tool.
What Is the Enneagram System?
The Enneagram is a personality system that has its roots hundreds of years back. It identifies at its core that there are 9 patterns of thinking, feeling and acting and that each of us is born with a predominant preference to one. Unlike some of the other popular systems, it does it put us in a box for life.
This system allows for unique patterns within each type and opportunity for growth over time. This was one of the main by-in points for me when I was introduced to it in the mid 90’s.
So just as in real life, it reflects where we are similar to others, unique due to our own experiences and how we can change over time. It can highlight our natural gifts, challenges and what we tend to pay attention to. It’s all about the why behind how we automatically show up in the world. What motivates us. Examples are to be right, to be liked, to be authentic, to be prepared or to have fun.
The shift after my introduction to the Enneagram has been so huge that I am not sure how my life would have turned out without it!
Initially it explained some challenging relationships I had at work. I learned why some managers pushed my buttons, then how to shift my perspective to not take it personally and use the knowledge to provide a new way to respond.
As good as that was, it was at home that was the most pivotal. My husband and I had been together about 14 years and there were some well worn patterns, some that worked and some that were the source of some painful exchanges. We had been blessed with 3 sons and I was able to learn how to parent them for who they are and not who we are. I truly believe it supported them to feel ore comfortable expressing their real selves. Nothing is perfect and mistakes were definitely made along the way, that’s part of life.
Finally as I moved into my own practice supporting people, it has allowed me to ask better questions and honour the clients for who they are and what’s going on in their life. It has become part of my inner instinctual knowledge and I am so grateful. Because it is dynamic, I never stop learning – yeah!
Want to Learn About the Enneagram System?
There is a good 15-minute introduction video on my website and an extended 30-minute video for those who want more.
There are numerous authors and websites to explore and self tests to take. I would caution that as good as a send test is, it is capturing you at a moment in time and therefore can be skewed. Go ahead and take them and then explore more before settling on your type.
Join Me For An Enneagram Workshop
On April 26th in the Newmarket, Ontario area , I will be running a full day workshop. The beauty about this day is that I invite representatives of each type to join us and express their world in their terms. It is so powerful. You might find it easier to land in your type and to get ah ha moments as you see glimpses of other special people in your life.
