In my reiki master’s home is a plaque that speaks to me every time that I see it. So whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hannukkah or a holiday season by any other name, I hope this will resonate with you in the coming weeks. It reads:
“Love me when I least deserve it because that is when I need it the most!”
This message reminds me of many moments in my life when those close to me are in “That Space”. It happens often at this time of year when people are stressing out over the holidays. You know, those times when people in your life are miserable, moody, pushy or just closed off! That is exactly what is happening – they or we are closing off the world because we are not feeling ready to take in any more. The ‘more’ I am referring to, is more burdens, more challenges, more pain or whatever has put us into this place of negativity. A self fulfilling scenario occurs as we express our own message of negativity to the world; we get more of that back. Our ego gets to be right – we are justified in our bad mood because the world is just not kind and loving at this time.
We tend to give young children a break because we know they are just feeling hurt. We approach them with a message that it’s not that bad and we attempt to shift their perspective so that they are happy and open once again.
Somehow when we grow up, we have higher expectations of ourselves and of course others do too. I can hear that voice in my head saying “oh just snap out if it” when someone close to me is in “That Space” for too long. I live with 4 men in my house ( 3 adult sons and my husband) who don’t let me get away with being in a negative space for very long at all before they will subtly say something like, “what’s up with you today – why are you in such a _____ mood?” This usually triggers a response in me that complains about not even being able to be in a bad space – however, it is a gift. I get to decide whether it is a worthy space to be in and deal with the issue or if I just need to bring awareness to an emotion inside me that I have not dealt with.
At a recent Women’s Circle, our presenter Virginia Hackson, had a brilliant way of expressing this. She shared that it was never in our best interest to “rent space in our bodies to unresolved issues”. I love this simple expression because it is true!
So, when I find myself in a negative mood, I am learning to realize that I really need to show myself some love as I would to a young child. And of course what we learn to give ourselves, we can learn to give others. This Christmas season, when stress can create thin fuses in our emotional balance, let’s remember to “Show the Love!”
I will close this post with one of my favourite pieces that I recently rediscovered in my notes and will keep in the forefront over the coming weeks.
