Last fall I decided it was time to take action on one of my dream projects…my Fairy Garden. I know – you are thinking, what constitutes a Fairy Garden? I have 3 sons so I have had that question arise a time or two. My vision was to have a garden located outside my home office window that I could gaze out to when I was home working on the computer. It would be a place that invited nature to interact and I could watch and enjoy the happy scenery. It all started when I bought a wonderful bird house from our church talent auction that was made by one of our elders. I asked my husband to put it up outside my office window where I could watch the birds come and go.

I had no idea how much joy that would bring me until the first spring when the young birds were flitting back and forth learning how to fly from their bird house to the trees and chasing each other around as they got more adept. One day as I was allowing my attention to be taken by the sight, I drifted off into my creative thinking and decided it was time to create a garden around the bird house; a Fairy Garden. This garden was one that would provide texture, scent and colour to attract pollinators, hummingbirds and butterflies. So I contacted my favourite landscape designer to come in, hear my vision and add her experience to the design and plant choices. The colour mock-up was completed last fall and a week ago, the finished garden was born!

I had my homework to do over the winter. I needed to find a couple of big rocks that would be just the right ones to add to the garden. One presented itself as soon as I put my intention to finding them but that was it. It was huge and I knew I needed my husband’s talent and loader to move it into place. On Easter Sunday morning, early before the frosted ground warmed up, the big rock was moved into place. Then I needed to find my little fairy ornament so off to kijiji and…voila, I found her – out in Oshawa.

The May long weekend found us out in Cobourg and Port Hope adventuring with friends. We happened upon the most unique outdoor retail store called Primitive Designs. Now I had 2 wooden toadstools and a carved-out rock bird bath to add to my garden. All set – just waiting for the weather to warm up enough to work the ground and plant. What I didn’t know was that the second rock that was designed into the project showed up when my son was digging a 6 foot pit under the windmill on our property. It had one totally flat surface that could act as a resting spot. More magic!

On the day the crew showed up to create it, I was like a little child anticipating the end result and couldn’t wait to arrive home that day to see what had been done. I was thrilled with the result and took my little chair and cool drink out to just sit and enjoy the beautiful site. Who knew that a small little plot of land could bring such JOY? All the young plants will now come to life as the weeks ensue – bringing more height, colour, and ever-changing look to this little garden.
