Commitments to Building Personal Resilience

This year I have been focusing on building my well-being and spiritual practices. I have always had many interests and love to learn. One of the challenges this brings is that I have not been committed to a specific personal practice on a daily basis. After 5 months of making a commitment to myself to do a daily practice; I am realizing just how much it contributes to building my overall personal resilience.

It started in February when I attended a Reiki Masters intensive in Arizona. I returned ready to make a daily commitment to my personal reiki practice. Don’t get me wrong – I practice almost daily in my work for clients, I use reiki as my ‘go to’ whenever issues arise but that is very different from spending time each day doing my self-reiki. Whether I have 10 minutes or 60 minutes, I have added this routine into my day. I have experienced a higher sense of inner balance and calm.

During the month of June I embarked on a wonderful program called Bridges to your Purpose. It was an intensive journey through exercises that enabled me to create and articulate my current life purpose statement. What an amazing experience to awaken parts of me that I had buried deep down many years ago as I “grew up” so to speak. I have a child like sense of wonder in our world and like to believe in the power of magic and miracles that are always present if we are looking for them. I begin each day by stating my life purpose statement and it sets the tone for what comes into my field of awareness and experience.

The last part of my current practice came from my kundalini yoga teacher, Marise Foster (pictured above). She sent out an invitation to join a 90 day challenge; a commitment to complete a 16 minute breath and kirtan exercise every day. I joined late because I thought when I first read it that I have that daily practice covered. Then we had a class and she talked about the power that comes from a daily breath and mantra practice. She said a happy life comes from commitment and discipline. I realized something inside me was asking to add this. The group chose to do a 5 minute breath of fire and an 11 minute kirtan kriya. 11 minutes is the time required to begin to change the pituitary gland and the nerves. 90 days is the time required to confirm a new habit.

This compliment of practices has been part of my life for 4 weeks now since I completed the program in June. I look forward to each one of them and have really been noticing an increased level of energy, discernment and fulfillment each day.

    Thank you Karen for letting us know about your daily practice. It’s very confirming that I’m not alone in feeling the need for more knowledge and knowing that we can be of more help in the world when we take care of ourselves. My routine is Journaling, self awareness studies and exercise in the morning, meditation after lunch and reiki at night. If I get out of routine, I simply get back into routine by taking on the attitude that I am adding something new to my life.

      Hi Tammy – wonderful list of practices that you have right now. I think that one of the most important things to remember is that these practices are part of our life and like any part of our life, some days get off track. We just pick back up the next opportunity we have, as it does not serve us to beat ourselves up so to speak. Whe we remember these practices do add value to our life, it’s easier to create the time to complete them. Way to go – you are a true inspiration.
